Goofs
Appearance
- When Joey and Pacey talk in the truck, Joey's hair gets goes from being in the blanket to out of the blanket several times.
- The waterline on Joey's shirt changes every time you see her while she's with Pacey in the water. Sometimes it's high and sometimes it's low.
Continuity
- When Pacey is explaining to Joey why the snails are dead, he is holding a snail in his left hand. However, when we cut to a shot of him from behind, the snail has disappeared, but in the next shot, when we go back to a shot from the front, it's back again.
- In the pilot episode, Joey had biology first period, but Dr. Rand tells Pacey that a student from his sixth period class would be coming down, not first period.
Timeline
- What time of year is it anyway? Just one episode earlier, Joey says that Dawson has known Jen for 3 months, meaning it must be about November or December. Are they already getting back their biology midterms? Also, they take their English midterm in The All-Nighter, about two months later!
Technical
- Cliff plays the carnival game twice; the shot of him throwing the baseball is exactly the same in both shots. (The shot was reused.)
- Dr. Rand replaces a much older man who was the biology teacher in the pilot episode.
- The Witter family truck is the same truck that Bessie got stuck in the mud in Look Who's Talking.
- Pacey was wearing boxers when he was supposed to be naked while changing into the blanket.
- People keep staring at the camera and at Pacey and Dawson while they're talking about Joey.
- Pacey changes into Bodie's clothes. It's kind of weird that he kept wearing Bodie's clothes to his job at the video store. At the video store, they usually wear a vest with a name tag
Incorrect
- Why doesn't Dawson pick up the phone when his parents are talking? We've seen in previous episodes that there are plenty of phones in the house. Did he check his Caller ID and realize it wasn't important?
- In the pilot, Joey tells Bessie to stay out of her room. However, this episode establishes that Joey doesn't have her own room and sleeps in the living room.
Joey lost her room in the Baby episode, when it became Alexander's nursery.
(Submissions by Justin, Adi, and Rachel Marcus)
Notes
- Both Katie Holmes and Joshua Jackson had to swim in freezing cold water in the middle of November to film the scene.
- When Pacey's looking at Joey when she doesn't have a shirt on, this is a body double; it's not really Katie Holmes.
(Submitted by observer)
- Notice the fried dough sign at the carnival?
- Why does Pacey have two blankets in his car?
- Although this episode was originally titled after the movie Modern Romance, it was retitled (now called Double Date) like all the episodes in the first season to prevent potential lawsuits due to copyright infringement.
- Body is never mentioned again after this episode.

Episode Title
Modern Romance (1981)
Robert Cole, a film editor, is constantly breaking up with and reconciling with long-suffering girl friend Mary Harvard, who works at a bank. He is irrationally
jealous and self-centered, while Mary has been too willing to let him get away with his disruptive antics. Can they learn to live with each other? Can they learn to live without each other? (Summary by Reid Gagle)
Review
Wayne:
Although the entire carnaval storyline bored me completely, the Pacey/Joey project more than made up for it. There was great comedy in the episode and everytime the snails were mentioned I started cracking up. There are many great lines in this episode and we see Dawson's feelings for Joey explored further. (8/10)
Drew:
