Goofs
Appearance
- When Jen is seen watching Dawson and Joey on the pier, she's wearing a suede jacket but when she goes over to Dawson's house, she's wearing a beige sweatshirt/jacket on.
Continuity
- Jen says that she's never had any close girlfriends but in The Breakfast Club she said that her best friend back in New York was a girl.
- Jen uncomfortably watches Dawson lead Joey to a bench holding her hand, and she folds her arms. But when the shot cuts back to her, her arms are uncrossed, and she crosses them again before walking off.
Technical
- When Pacey is doing his little Braveheart speech in the pageant, he wanders away from the microphone a couple of times, but his volume remains constant.
Notes
- Katies Holmes did sing the song from Les Miserables. Like most lengthy songs, however, the song was first pre-recorded and she lip-syched it during filming. The lip-syching is a little off.
- Though they look similiar, Pacey actually wears two different tuxedos during the Miss Windjammer Pageant.
- Although this episode was originally titled after the movie Pretty Woman, it was retitled (now called Beauty Contest) like all the episodes in the first season to prevent potential lawsuits due to copyright infringement.
Joey's Song
Here are the full lyrics of the song Joey sung for the beauty pageant. Yes, Katie Holmes did sing it in the episode.
Les Miserables
On my own
Pretending he's beside me
All alone
I walk with him till morning
Without him
I feel his arms around me
And when I lose my way I close my eyes
And he has found me
In the rain the pavement shines like silver
All the lights are misty in the river
In the darkness, the trees are full of starlight
And all I see is him and me forever and forever
And I know it's only in my mind
That I'm talking to myself and not to him
And although I know that he is blind
Still I say, there's a way for us
I love him
But when the night is over
He is gone
The river's just a river
Without him
The world around me changes
The trees are bare and everywhere
The streets are full of strangers
I love him
But every day I'm learning
All my life
I've only been pretending
Without me
His world would go on turning
A world that's full of happiness
That I have never known
I love him
I love him
I love him
But only on my own.

Review
Wayne:
This was a great episode. Pacey's plot line was fun and interesting. Jen's attempt at friendship with Joey backfires and we see the real beginning of a relationship between Dawson and Joey. Pacey's attempt to win the pageant balances out the episode with some humor. The song Joey sings is pretty good and fits in with the plot. The scene between Dawson and Joey at the end is awesome finally gives us what we've been hoping for for the last 11 episodes making this my favorite episode so far. (10/10)
Drew:
This is a great episode filled with love, humour, and conflict. Dawson finally sees Joey like she is meant to be seen, and a funny storyline involving Capeside's teenage comedian, Pacey, balanced out the seriousness.
Joey's speech during the pageant is very touching and heartfelt, she should've been nominated for an Emmy for it. Also Joey sings On My Own from Les Miserables as part of the talent portion of the show, and is a little awkward at first, but Katie did a great job of this great song.
To counter the seriousness of everything else, Pacey gives a Braveheart-like speech in a dress. 'Nuff said. The emotional climax came when Dawson confesses to Joey about his new found love for her, but Joey rejects him even though she's wanted that moment for so long. This episode is just fully loaded with emotional highs and gives us a chance to see Joey in a whole new perspective. (9.5/10)
