Goofs

Appearance

  • Joey's hair is hanging over her right ear as she says, "Yeah, I did." She looks at Dawson and pulls the hair behind her ear as she goes on to say, "Look Dawson, I'm so tired of dancing around all these big words. I just want to be honest with you." Her hair is still behind her ear but when Dawson is telling her that he thinks they're ready for honesty, her hair is now over her ear. There's no way Katie could have pulled the hair over her ear since she was in the camera shot and her hand never came near her ear. In the last scene when she's asking him if he's sure about telling the truth, her hair is now behind her ear again and Katie was in the shot the whole time and once again, her hand never came near her right ear.
  • If you look at Dawson the whole time he's in the scene with Joey, his famous necklace is hanging around his neck outside of his shirt but when he pulls Joey to kiss her in the last few seconds of the show, the necklace is now inside his shirt. James' hands never came near his neck before the end of the scene so how did the necklace get inside his shirt?
  • Jen's shirt changes color in the morning. When she wakes up next to Dawson it's colored Bordeaux red and when she is on the porch with her grandmother it's a dark blue.

Continuity

  • Dawson locker moves to a completely different location. He had one near Pacey in The Scare.
  • Jen's books change order several times while she and Dawson talk in the hallway.
  • When Dawson is talking to Joey on the dock outside his house, there are at first two orange "life-savers" visible. But towards the end of this episode, we get a few scenic shots of the dock and his house, and there is only one "life-saver" visible.

Timeline

  • Joey said she only had two days to decide if she wanted to go to France, but by the end of the third day she still hadn't make a decision.
  • In The Breakfast Club episode, Dawson says that he was there for Joey in sixth grade when her mother died, but in this episode, Joey tells Dawson that the last time she saw her father was 2 years ago when he was cheating on her mother. If they are in tenth grade, then two years ago would have been 8th grade.
  • This episode says that Joey's mum died two years ago when her dad was put in jail, but Breakfast Club says it was sixth grade, which was four years ago.

Technical

  • You can't check into a motel unless you are an adult in most states. Joey says she's 15 in this episode and I doubt Dawson's much older.
  • In the scene where Jen goes to visit her grandfather in the hospital and she's taking about wanting him to come back to her, the tube that is supposed to be in his mouth is out of his mouth.
  • In the season finale, Joey makes the comment that it's freezing. When Joey and Dawson kiss they are wearing warm clothes. The next day Joey is wearing shorts and a tank top

Incorrect

  • When Joey and Dawson are getting ready to get on the bus to go see her dad, Dawson asks her "When was the last time you saw your dad...?" If they've been life-long friends, wouldn't he know?
  • It was clearly small talk.

Notes

  • Did Joey and Dawson's sudden get-together seem a little sudden for you? They're together mostly because of a business decision. The WB didn't know how successful the show would be when it bought the 13 first season episodes to air. The pilot was shot last April/May and the show got the go ahead to film 12 additional shows in July but the network wasn't sure whether Dawson's Creek would be popular at all. When the writers sat down to plan out the shows, they wanted to have some sort of cliffhanger if the show was a success but also some sort of closure if the show bombed. If the show didn't succeed, it would end with Dawson and Joey being together and everyone happy. All the episodes were finished by December and the show premiered in January.
  • Katie Holmes (Joey) found out early about her kissing scene with James Van Der Beek (Dawson) so as a joke, she ate an onion right in front of him before they were going to shoot the kiss. After an altoid or two, her breath still reeked, however, so embarassed, she went back and brushed her teeth before the shooting of the scene.
  • The show Dawson and Joey watch at the beginning of the episode is Party of Five, another popular teen show.
  • The ending for this episode was originally different. The silhouette of Dawson and Joey kissing was replaced by Dawson picking up Joey and placing her on his bed.
  • Did the Pacey storyline seem a little short to you? According to Dylan Neal (Doug), that's because a scene between Pacey and Doug that resolved a lot of their problems with their dad was cut. But it won't be resolved now that Neal has become a regular on Hyperion Bay.
  • Joey and Dawson's comment about using big words is a joke addressing critics' comments that Dawson's Creek's dialogue comtains too many complex words.
  • Jen told Grams in the pilot that she wouldn't go to church until Grams said the word "penis." Grams must of talked dirty while off-camera. (Submitted by Nick Brendon)
  • Dawson's room contains a mask from Scream, a movie produced by Kevin Williamson.
  • Dawson's statement that "Even Spielberg outgrew his Peter Pan syndrome" was first said by Joey during the pilot.
  • Although this episode was originally titled after the movie Breaking Away, it was retitled (now called Decisions) like all the episodes in the first season to prevent potential lawsuits due to copyright infringement.

Episode Title

Breaking Away (1979)

The Stollers' only child has graduated high school and (along with three friends) must decide what to do with his life. He won a bike in the year before opening scene and has become very good at racing, winning all the local trophies. His heroes are the Cinzano racing team from Italy. He begins listening to operas, learning Italian, and finally shaving his legs to cut down wind resistance. All of this is driving his father crazy. He even pretends to be an Italian exchange student when he meets a college girl. Set in the area around Indiana University, it dwells on the alienation between the college students and the locals, who are called 'Cutters'. How the four Cutters take on the fraternities in the yearly bike race, earning not only the college students' respect, but their peers as well is the focal point of the film. (Summary by John Vogel)

Review

Wayne:

This episode was awesome! Everything finally is brought together. Joey's scenes with her father were great. Some growth is shown in Pacey as the conversation with Doug actually disturbs him. Gramps is brought back from the early episodes and even the scenes with Grams and Jen were interesting. And most obvious, the relationship between Dawson and Joey continues to grow and reaches a climax sped by Joey's possible move to France, a plotline which seems realistic. I would have enjoyed a finale that brought didn't wrap everything up at the end, but it was still a great episode. (10/10)

Drew:

Ahhh... the inevitable cliffhanger episode. Will Joey go to France or will she stay in Capeside with her beloved Dawson? The opening scene with Joey mocking writers of television shows for their almost obvious attempts to hold the audience's interest with a cliffhanger, is a funny scene to watch.

The developing relationship with Joey and Pacey are very enjoyable to see, because those are the two most interesting main characters (at least to me). After Jen's grandfather died, we are shown the soft side of Grams when she is crying in the arms of her grandchild, which to me, was a surprising thing to watch since Grams is usually a very tough person. The best scene of this episode (and second best scene in DC) is when Joey confronts her father about how he abandoned her, and neither of them know anything about each other. Joey asks her father if he loves her, and he lets her know that he is not the only one who loves her. Dawson also does.

At the end, things are wrapped up with Dawson and Joey kissing passionately, and fans of Dawson and Joey being together celebrate this joyous occasion. (10/10)
