Episode Guide: Emotions in Motion - Cut Scenes

  • In the next set of differences, we see a brief scene that was removed from the broadcast version. This is in the scene starting at 11:28 where Dawson takes Jen to his room to show her his "studio."
    • First, it sounds like a different voice is used for the Grams character that calls Jen home from next door. In this version, as Dawson is talking to Jen about the Boston Film Festival, we hear Grams' voice off-screen call, "Jennifer?" This voice sounds different from the voice we hear in the broadcast pilot.
    • Next, as Jen walks to look out the window, we see a silhouette her grandmother standing in the doorway of their house and Grams shouts, "Where are you?" delivered by the same presumably different voice. The Grams silhouette is in the broadcast pilot, but the "Where are you?" voice-over was cut.
    • Another differing line happens when Jen is seen looking out Dawson's window toward Grams. Here she says, "I'm coming!... I'll be right there!" That shot remains, but the line was cut from the broadcast pilot.
    • The last difference in this scene happens after Jen leaves. After she leaves, Dawson leans back, looks to the Steven Spielberg picture next to his bed and says, "Nice, huh? A little Kate Capshaw thing happening, you think?" This shot was removed from the broadcast version.
  • Another difference are the scenes in Grams' house where Jen goes in and checks on her grandfather and when Grams and Jen are sitting at their kitchen table about to eat breakfast. This is when the dialogue between the two happens where we find out that Grams is a devout Christian and Jen is an atheist. These scenes and others with Grams are, like Nellie Olsen's, not present in the unaired pilot.
  • For the next scenes at the high school, beginning at approx. 14:25, Sheryl Crow's "Every Day is a Winding Road" plays throughout instead of Chumbawamba's "Tubthumping". Again, the Nellie Olsen scene in the hallway where she walks up to Jen and asks her if she parties is missing, as is the following scene where Dawson walks up to Jen and they talk about the classes on their schedules.
  • Another scene that is missing from the unaired pilot is the scene where Dawson meets and converses with the school's film class teacher Mr. Gold.
  • Another musical difference happens during the lunchtime scene at 16:25 when Dawson, Jen, and Joey are sitting at the lunch table talking. In the broadcast version, "Mercy Me" by Say-So plays over the scene. In the unaired pilot, a different song is used. I'm sorry, but I don't know the name of this song.
  • Another scene missing from the unaired pilot comes in here after the Pacey/Tamara classroom dialogue. It's the scene in the hallway where an excited Pacey runs up to Dawson and tells him about his encounter with Tamara. Pacey asks Dawson go along with him to the theater that night to see Tamara and suggests that Dawson bring Jen along. Pacey then points out to Dawson the jock hitting on Jen and encourages Dawson to go over and reclaim his woman, and Dawson goes over and talks to Jen.
  • This whole exchange between Dawson and Pacey is not present in the unaired pilot. The unaired pilot instead features a different version of this scene. The unaired pilot shows a shot of Dawson coming out of his classroom where he looks around and spots the jock (different actor) talking to Jen. Then we have a different take of Dawson talking to Jen after the jock leaves. This take is in a different part of the hallway.
  • The next difference is again musical. In the scene at 18:38 where Dawson rides up to Joey on his bicycle and asks her to go to the movies with him, Pacey, and Jen, the unaired pilot has the Cardigans' "Lovefool" playing where the broadcast version plays original Dawson's Creek score.
  • Another scene missing from the unaired pilot occurs here in the broadcast version. The scene in Grams' house where Grams asks Jen where she is going before Jen leaves for the movies is, of course, not present in the unaired pilot.
  • Here at 19:28, we get a different take of the scene where Dawson and his father have a small chat before Dawson leaves for the movies, with Mitch Leery again played by the unknown actor. This version of the scene doesn't contain the dialogue that establishes that Mitch is developing an idea for an aquatic-themed restaurant. This version instead starts off with Dawson walking into the living room to find his father sitting in a chair in front of the TV watching his wife's news broadcast. The dialogue in this version of the scene starts off like this:

Dawson: Ah, Dad, I'm outta here.
Mitch: God, she sizzles. Watching your mother work is the best foreplay.
    Dawson: God, too much information.
    Mitch: Have fun, play safe.

  • It's also worth noting that the living room's design in this scene is different in the unaired pilot and that the sound of the doorbell that rings near the end of the scene in the broadcast version is not present here.

  • Another musical difference turns up next. The scene at 20:23 where Bessie grabs Joey and applies lipstick on her as Joey is leaving to join the rest of the kids at the movies has Jewel's "You Were Meant For Me" playing in the background as opposed to Jann Arden's "Good Mother".
  • The final differences occur in the last scene of the episode.
    • First, No Doubt's "Don't Speak" plays here instead of The Pretenders' "I'll Stand by You".
    • The difference in the script here is significant in that if the decision was made to keep this ending, it likely would have impacted future episodes.

In the broadcast pilot, as Joey is rowing away from Dawson's house after Dawson yells out from his bedroom window confessing to her his masturbatory habits, she hears a car door slam. Looking toward the direction of the sound, she sees Dawson's mother kissing Bob, her co-anchor, after being driven home by him. Joey, stunned by this sight, looks back up to Dawson's window, only to find that he has by now gone back inside. The ending that the unaired pilot uses is the same, except that the film is edited to show both Joey and Dawson seeing Dawson's mother kissing Bob. Or I should probably say that the broadcast pilot was re-edited with Dawson's reaction shots removed, showing only Joey seeing Gail's actions.

Here is how the ending plays in the unaired pilot: As Joey rows away, she hears the car door slam. She looks over and is startled to see Gail kissing Bob. Dawson, still looking out his bedroom window, glances over to see what Joey is looking at. Gail and Bob finish their kiss and Gail turns to leave. Joey looks back up to Dawson. Dawson, after witnessing the kiss, quickly turns back to Joey with a look of hurt and disbelief. Joey stares back at him. Dawson's look has not changed. Joey quietly drifts out of the frame.
