  • In the original presentation video shown to the WB executives, both Joey and Dawson saw his mom kiss Bob the anchorman. The scene was shot six different ways, and for a long time they were struggling between the Joey-and-Dawson shot or the just Joey shot, which they obviously chose in the end.
  • Katie Holmes' line, "Bite me," is also her first line in her movie Disturbing Behavior.
  • There where 46 movie and television show references in this episode and 16 Spielberg posters can be found.
  • Jen's comment about Dawson's clear skin is a joke referring to James Van Der Beek's early career in skin care commercials.
  • The wall is barren above Dawson's bed. Ever since then, there's been a collage of things above his bed. There are pictures, and other little such things, including a sign reading Dawson St.
  • Dawson's obsession with Spielberg is based on Kevin Williamson's obsession with the director. He has called him a "god and the primary influence on my professional life".
  • Katie Holmes' line, Don't have an anerism! is from Scream, a Kevin Williamson film.
  • Randy from Scream works at a video store just like Dawson and Pacey do.
  • In I Know What You Did Last Summer, another Williamson film, the beach in the beginning of the story is called Dawson's Beach. This is said when they are reading the articles about David Egan's girlfriend's death. (Submitted by Jessica)
  • Both Gail Leery and Gale Weathers (from Scream) share the same name and profession.
  • Dawson's line to Pacey, "Tact, look it up," is a paraphrase of a line from Scream. Billy said it to Stu. (Submitted by Amanda and Jessica)
  • The Realto theater that everyone goes to shares the same name as the theater Jada Pinkett and her boyfriend enter in the opening of Scream 2.
  • Nellie's line to Pacey in the video store, "Did you send a negative, disparaging remark my way," is almost the exact same thing Mrs. Lumas says to Sidney in Scream 2. "Was that a negative, disparaging, remark towards my son?"
  • In I Know What You Did Last Summer (another Williamson film), Helen calls Barry "Mr. Man-Meat," which is also the name that Gail calls Mitch.
  • Nellie Olsen almost always wears red, pink, or lavender.
  • Paula Cole's song I Don't Want to Wait was not supposed to be the original theme song for Dawson's Creek. Alanis Morrisette's Hand In My Pocket was, but she didn't feel comfortable with having her song on a TV show. Paula Cole wasn't sure either until after being shown this episode. She then gave the ok days before the episode's airing. When Dawson's Creek is shown outside the United States, a song sung by Jane Arden is used instead.
  • Strange how we never see Dawson working at the video store ever again. We see Pacey plenty of times. Did Dawson get fired?
  • This episode is novelized along with the episode Dirty Dancing in the book Dawson's Creek: The Beginning of Everything Else.
  • A video of this episode was sent to Emmy voters in hopes of getting the show nominated for an Emmy award. Like all such previews, the video states "For Your Consideration" at the top.
  • Although this episode was originally titled after a movie, it was retitled (now called Pilot) like all the episodes in the first season to prevent potential lawsuits due to copyright infringement.
