Goofs

Appearance

  • After shooting, Joey and Dawson head over to Dawson's room. Why is Joey wearing completely different clothes? Did she row home and change? Dawson's wearing the exact same clothes he was wearing while shooting.

Continuity

  • How can Nellie be in Dawson's English class (making her a sophomore) and in Dawson's film class (which bars sophomores from enrolling)?

Technical

  • When Joey and Dawson are walking home from the dance, Dawson is whining about his plans not working. Katie Holmes says, "the remote on the rewind of life doesn't work" instead of "the rewind on the remote of life doesn't work." She caught it and starts laughing but James continues on with the scene.

Incorrect

  • Cliff asks Jen, "Who is this guy?" when Dawson tries to cut into their dance. But weren't they just introduced?
  • This "goof" depends on whether you think Cliff's question was rhetorical or not. If it was a rhetorical question he just meant "where does this guy get off". If it was meant "what is this guy's name" then it would be a "Timeline Goof". It is a matter of how one looks at it.

Notes

  • Katie Holmes (Joey) had to sit still for about 2 hours-three different times-while rubber was poured on her face to make the "Joey mask" on which Dawson practices his kissing. After several unsuccessful attempts at molding a latex "Joey" face for Dawson's famous mask-kissing scene, the props people came up with something else. The "rubber" Joey mask on which Dawson practiced his kissing technique was actually concrete and weighed about 30 pounds!
  • In the pilot episode, Dawson had a Schindler's List poster on the left door of his closet and a The Color Purple poster on the right door of his closet. In this episode and in subsequent ones, there has been a Hook poster on the right door and a Close Encounters of the Third Kind poster on the left door.
  • In the first scene when Dawson and Joey are in his bedroom... above his closet door is a street sign labeled Dawson St. There is an actual Dawson St. in Wilmington, N.C. where the show is filmed. (Submitted by Ribbit1357)
  • Dawson's decription of Cliff as a J.Crew ad is an obvious plug for the show's sponsor who provides all of the wardrobe for Dawson's Creek. In fact, James Van Der Beek was a J.Crew ad for January and March 1998.
  • On the 47th and 48th minute of the first and second episodes, Tamara and Pacey kissed.
  • Kevin Williamson's trying to be funny by describing his movie Scream as a "rip off of a rip-off".
  • In this episode we find out Joey's dad had an affair with a blonde which destroyed her parents' marriage.
  • Jen slips on the dance floor when she's dancing with Cliff.
  • James messes up one of his lines as well when he says, "Just chain me to my bed and wait for my moment of clarity to come." The line is supposed to be, "Just chain me to my bed and wait until my moment of clarity comes". Though it's only a minor mistake, Katie notices this and almost laughs.
  • This episode is novelized along with Emotions in Motion in the book Dawson's Creek: The Beginning of Everything Else.
  • Although this episode was originally titled after the movie Dirty Dancing, it was retitled (now called Dance) like all the episodes in the first season to prevent potential lawsuits due to copyright infringement.

Cut Scenes

This scene is rumored to have been shot but never aired due to time restraints. It takes place right after Joey tells Dawson she's leaving the dance but before Dawson goes to cut in on Jen and Cliff). Keep in mind that this scene is only rumor:

She didn't get far enough fast enough. Suddenly Pacey was grabbing her arm. "Dance with me, Joey," he commanded.

"What!" Had everyone in here gone crazy. Had someone slipped something into the tropical punch?

"Please, you gotta," Pacey said. "I'm trying to make this girl jealous. Please, Joey, put aside your disgust for one moment in time and dance with me. I beg of you."

Joey's mouth tugged down in repulsion. Dawson might have turned into his own sea creature, but Pacey was, after all, the original monster from the deep. And typecast. "I'd rather slide down a razor blade into a huge Jacuzzi full of lemon juice."

But Pacey got his arms around her and started pushing her onto the dance floor.

Joey tried the elbow maeuver that she'd used on Pacey in the film. But this wasn't playacting. The guy was determined. He held her tight and started moving to the slow music. "I'm gonna kill you," Joey said through gritted teeth.

Pacey didn't ease up. "Please. I have cash."

"Let me go before I whip your ass over this court," Joey threatened.

But Pacey was looking off to the side of the gym. Joey saw a small, satisfied smile appear on his face. He looked back at her. "Kiss me," he said.

"You've lost it." Joey yanked away from him. Hard.

Pacey pulled her back in just before she'd fully broken away. "You can hate me forever, Joey, but right now just close your eyes and think of someone else."

She didn't know what hit her. Pacey grabbed her face in his hands, and his mouth was on her mouth. She felt his lips moving over hers with surprising skill. Her eyes closed. Pacey vanished, and it was someone else: His lips. Just think about his lips-nothing else. She felt herself give in, her mouth melt open, their tongues meet...

And then he was pulling away, and her eyes flew open and-- Pacey! The horror of it crashed over her. She brought her hand up and slapped him across the face. Violently, her palm striking his check with a loud clap.

"You stagnant swer filth!" she snarled.

Review

Wayne:

The show really starts getting moving with this episode with more interaction between all the characters. The Joey/Jen conflict and Pacey's obsession with Tamara really gets going and the issue of Mrs. Leery's affair gets more of a focus. (7/10)

Drew:

Cool parts about this episode were seeing Joey in a bikini and Jen wiping the "blood" off her. Too bad there's a towel in the way. Just kidding! The scene where Dawson fake-kisses the Joey-head is sweet the first time you see it, but later it gets cheesy. Seeing Dawson get all fussed up about Joey kissing Pacey is a riot, and so is Cliff's stupid movie. Man, I hate Bob. Stick it to Mrs. Leary, Joey!

Because we get to see Joey in a bikini, along with all the other cool stuff, I give this episode a seven. (7/10)
