Goofs

Appearance

  • Joey's jeans change color to black in the bathroom scene.

Continuity

  • When they sneak out of the library you see Ms. Tingle with her arm up on the chair but when the gang sneaks across, Ms. Tingle now has her arm in her lap.
  • Mrs. Tingle seems to believe there isn't any food available in the gym but we see Joey and Abby eating candy. They must have obtained it somewhere.
  • During the first basketball game Dawson's sweat line changes several times.
  • Abby leaves her lipstick and compact lying on the table in the last scene, but in a later shot the lipstick is in an upright position whereas it was left on its side before.
  • There is one poster shown in two locations in the library. It says something like "Study Into 1998" and in one of the locations a bookcase periodically covers a portion of the poster.
  • There are three different clocks shown in the same spot in the library.

Timeline

  • Detention started at 8 AM and finished at 5 PM (nine total hours) but everyone says it's only eight hours. They didn't lose an hour for lunch because Abby said they hadn't had anything to eat.

Technical

  • Jen and Pacey are supposed to kiss for 10 seconds, but they actually kiss for 15 seconds. Joey and Dawson are supposed to kiss for 15 seconds but they actually kiss for 26 seconds.

Incorrect

  • Everyone seems quick to believe Abby was in detention because she was caught with ecstasy. Would it be more likely that she'd be in jail if that was the case?
  • Teenagers are not exactly the best judges of criminal punishments

  • When Ms. Tingle dumps the cards out, you see a few cards don't quite make it quite out of the drawer even after she's dropped the drawer to the floor. The shot immediately after shows the drawer to be completely empty, however.
  • It's not completeley empty, there are still some on the left. They are just hard to see.

Notes

  • Because school was in session during filming and the producers wanted to use the local high school library, the episode had to be filmed after school hours from 5:00 PM until after 5:00 AM.
  • The "basketball" thrown at Joshua Jackson's head was actually a balloon prop cleverly disguised like a basketball. The ball bounces off Pacey and hits the camera and bouces off of that, there is nothing else it could have possibly hit besides the camera.
  • When filming the scene where they rush back from the gym, the crew put baby powder on the floor and oil on the cast's shoes to make them slide. Michelle Williams slid out of control, fell over, hit her head and nearly knocked herself unconscious. (Submitted by paceygirls)
  • Joshua Jackson constantly pulls pranks on the show's crew. So, right before they shot Josh running through the boy's locker room door after the game of one-on-one, a member of the crew locked the door. Josh ran right into it and the rest of the cast slid into him. Everyone in the crew applauded, happy to get back at Josh.
  • Jen says when they are playing Guess My Butt that she knows which one is Pacey's butt and when asked by Dawson how she knows she replies "I just know." Coincidentally, Joshua Jackson (Pacey) frequently moons the cast, and Michelle Williams really would know who's butt it was. (Submitted by Rachel Marcus)
  • Pacey's comment about duck movies is a reference to Joshua Jackson's early film career as Charlie in The Mighty Ducks movies.
  • Isn't it a little convienent that the four happen to end up in detention all at the same time? And who ever gets detention by disagreeing with a teacher during a class discussion?
  • The librarian, Mrs. Tingle, shares the same name as a character in Kevin Williamson's Teaching Ms. Tingle which stars Katie Holmes. The cast refer to her as "Mrs. Tringle" but this dubbing was done afterward. If you look at their lips, they're saying "Tingle."
  • Joey's crush on Dawson is based on Kevin Williamson's high school crush on his friend Fannie Norwood.
  • Although this episode was originally titled after the movie The Breakfast Club, it was retitled (now called Dentention) like all the episodes in the first season to prevent potential lawsuits due to copyright infringement.

Episode Title

The Breakfast Club (1985)

Five students: Allison, a weirdo; Brian, a nerd; John, a criminal; Claire, a prom queen; and Andy, a jock; are forced to spend the day in Saturday detention. At first they are quiet, but later they start talking and learn that behind the exterior, they are all the same.

There are some similiarities between the movie and this episode:

  • They run at the end to make it back to class to avoid getting caught by the teacher.
  • All the kids are popular actors at the time, but where will they be ten years from now?

Review

Wayne:

I love this episode! It's very uplifting after the last two let-downs episodes. Before, we were left to infer what the characters where feeling; this episode let it all out. Abby really seems to get them all going. The scene at the end of the episode with Joey pouring out her feelings to Dawson is priceless and confirms what we've all been thinking. The episode was quite different from the others we've been presented with and worked spectacularly. (9/10)

Drew:

This episode just rules. All of the dares, skipping detention, Pacey getting hit in the face with a basketball (lol) were just hilarious. I can't say much about this episode, since the episode speaks for itself, but Pacey getting caught in the washroom, and the final scene with Joey almost bearing all to Dawson was just gold. Pure gold. (9/10)
